In the 1980s, Bente Geving photographed her Sámi grandmother, Ellen, and her sisters Anna and Inga, in Sandnes, Sør-Varanger. The series follows the women in their everyday interactions and daily routines within their respective homes. With warmth and intimacy, Geving offers a glimpse into the lives of the three sisters without resorting to an exoticizing perspective. Although the photographs are now over forty years old, they remain both playful and engaging. The story of the three sisters is a unique document of Sámi cultural history, while at the same time telling a story that many people—Sámi and non-Sámi alike—can recognize and relate to.
