Marius Engh has recently been looking more closely at Bohemian mythology, with a starting point in Bohemia, but with samples from the ‘bohemian’ world. In his photographic projects he unwinds a tangled web of history, ideas and materials, not without a certain element of mystery. The focus point in his Angle is the closed-down Czech mining village of Jáchymov in the Karlovy Vary region, near the border with Germany, which until 1945 was called Sankt Joachimsthal. Large silver resources were found here at the beginning of the 16th century, and led to the introduction of a local monetary unit called the ‘Sankt Joachim thaler’.
